Defending a Child With ADHD And Autism Who Acted in Self Defence [Video]

This is the content of an email that I received at 14:35 on Tuesday 13th July 2016. It shows the courage and commitment of one trainer who has helped a family in what must have been a very distressing time for them both, and this is why I am proud of the NFPS Family and especially what Duncan has achieved here.

The emails read as follows:

“We have just defended a 12-year-old boy with Autism from getting a police caution, that had used self-defence in an incident at school. Despite the school having had positive handling training, they felt that the lad’s actions were socially unacceptable, and had tried to make the 12-year-old change his honestly held belief, to say that he was wrong, that was when the parent contacted me.

In the following meetings, the school was very defensive and subjective even after the appropriate laws were explained to them, as well as the fact that the lad with Autism would not be able to process what was going on in the same way as a person without Autism would.

One of the parents of the 7 other lads that were picking on this one lad took it to the police even after their son had admitted to starting the fight.

All of this I believe was fuelled by the response of the lad that was being attacked (the lad with Autism and ADHD). He pulled his attacker down to the floor by his hair and kicked him in the head twice.

They felt that kicking someone in the head was unacceptable, they could not see that the lad just did what he honestly felt in that moment of fear.

In the end I said to the parent who is a single parent, when the police invite you down to  the take the caution, tell them you are not excepting the caution and you will  see them in court, this was done after silence then  a bit of bluster the police officer said we will get back to you on this, they did the next day, they dropped all charges.

Now I can’t comment on the specifics of the case but what I am proud of is the fact that an NFPS Trained Trainer was willing to support this family in a time of crisis.

That is what I believe makes the NFPS Family special.
