A lot of agencies and training providers are teaching supine as a position as an alternative to prone as a result of the Department of Health Positive and Proactive Care Guidance that advised that prone should not be used.
In addition, NICE Guidance states that supine should be used as an alternative to prone, but NICE Guidance is only ‘advisory’ and not statutory and do not override decisions taken by health professionals based on individual circumstances.
The problem here is that a lot of organisations and training providers will simply follow ‘advice’ from an agency such as NICE without doing there own due diligence, and this is a very common problem.
So, is supine actually safer?
